Bindunuwewa

Bandarawela

Thirty one Tamil detainees were killed, hacked to death, by Sinhala gangs numbering several thousand persons. This was carried out with the complicity of Sri Lankan police and army.

The first thirteen named were killed instantly. The highly decomposed bodies of the following four were identified five days later. The last two named succumbed to their injuries several days later. The remaining twelve bodies, were mutilated or charred beyond recognition. The mobs had set the  rehabilitation centre on fire after the massacre. Relatives of Anthony John said one of his eyeballs had been removed, both his arms had been hacked off, and his body was severely cut.

17 year old Pushparaja Kandeepan had been arrested when he was staying at his parents home, Veeranagar, Trincomalee. One of those killed was a 12 year old boy whose crime was reportedly begging in Ampara. The third and forth named, were former members of PLOTE, paramilitaries operating with the Sri Lankan army. They had deserted, then were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, handed over to Vavuniya police, and taken to Bindunuwewa centre, after pleading not to have to go back to their villages where they feared they would be killed by PLOTE.

Mirusuvil

Jaffna

Eight Tamil civilians living in Point Pedro, displaced from their homes in Mirusuvil, went back there to collect personal belongings. They were arbitrarily arrested, by the Sri Lankan army, blind-folded and severely assaulted. They were then hacked to death by the soldiers and buried. One other man (see arbitrary arrests section, case no. 055 )  who was with them, managed to flee and inform the local authorites, who then insisted the army identify where the mass grave was. The grave was uncovered on 25/12/00.
